Academic Platoons & Tutoring

IVETS in partnership with amazing VMC faculty and graduate students offer academic platoons every semester in specific content area.   Platoons provide free drop-in assistance for students to receive support. Subject areas covered and times are listed below. All sessions take place in room 214 Calvin Hall

Fall 2024:
Chemistry Platoon: Tuesdays & Wednesdays 3:30-5:00 p.m. 
Math Platoon: Tuesdays 3:00-4:30 p.m. & Wednesdays 1:30-3:00 p.m.

Chemistry Platoon

Dr. Scott Daly (Department of Chemistry) was inspired by his experience as a service member to create a group to help fellow military-connected Hawkeyes learn chemistry. Learn more at here

Tuesdays from 3:00-4:30 p.m.

When Dr. Collen Mitchell's husband, a Marine Corps Veteran, heard about IVETS's call for math professors to start a tutoring program, he told her how much of a difference this program would have made when he returned to college for his degree in engineering. She decided to make the program a reality. 

 

Biology and Psychology Platoon

Angela Richardson is a 4th year PhD candidate in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at Iowa. She is studying how sleep facilitates sensorimotor development in the Blumberg Lab. As a post-comprehensive exam student, she has experience TAing for neuroscience courses here at Iowa and has a background in both biology and psychology. She is happy to work with the students of IVETS to assist with tutoring biology and psychology related courses.  Email angela-m-richardson@uiowa.edu 

Support for Difficult Courses

Student veterans at the University of Iowa commonly find a few common subjects difficult: Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. We have curated a list of campus resources to help you succeed in these subjects. 

Tutor Iowa

The university's Tutor Iowa program is home to a number of tutoring opportunities, from free small-group supplemental instruction sessions led by peers, to paid private tutors. You can find out about all of the tutoring options and find help for your class by searching their website. 

VA Tutorial Assistance

If you're receiving VA educational assistance and struggling in a course, you may be eligible for help paying for a tutor. Visit their website to see if you are eligible. Then, contact the IVETS office (registrar-vets-office@uiowa.edu) for assistance with the required forms. 

Tutor.com Assistance

Tutor.com/military offers free tutorial assistance for students in all branches of the Reserves, National Guard, ROTC, Wounded Warriors, and survivors of those KIA. Search subjects they tutor and get help right away.
