Veterans Day is Monday, November 11. The holiday provides an opportunity to honor and appreciate those who have served our country through military service. We are grateful for their commitment and would like to recognize the important contributions our student, staff, and faculty Veterans make to our campus community.
The following events have been planned in recognition of Veterans Day and in celebration of Veterans Week on the University of Iowa campus. Please check back regularly for updates and more information.
Sunday, Nov. 10
Veterans flag display set-up (volunteers welcomed)
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
West Lawn of the Pentacrest
The Veterans Association at IOWA (VAI) and Reserve Officer’s Training Corps will gather to place over 6,000 tiny American flags in the shape of a block “I” to honor Iowa Veterans. Community members are welcomed to help our Veteran and military-connected students set up the display on the west lawn of the Pentacrest.

Each flag of the block “I” display was requested by family, friends, or a loved one on behalf of a Veteran. Information about the Veteran is attached to the flag. We invite members of the campus community to visit and admire the display on the west lawn of the Pentacrest.
Monday, Nov. 11
Veterans Day Ceremony
12:00 – 12:30 p.m.
Veterans Plaza, north side of the IMU (214 Calvin Hall if inclement weather)
The community is invited to Veterans Day Ceremony honoring those who have served and are currently serving. The plaza features seven granite monuments and the United States flag standing in permanent tribute to the University of Iowa VMC faculty, staff, students, and alumni who served in the United States armed forces in recognition of their service to our country.

IVETS Open House
12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
214 Calvin Hall
Join Iowa Veteran Education and Support (IVETS) for an Open House immediately following the Veterans Day Ceremony. Tour the newly renovated student lounge and academic hub, and learn more about the Veteran and military-connected (VMC) students at IOWA.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Monday, Nov. 11
University Housing and Dining will offer a discount for veterans and their families during lunch service on Veteran's Day. Present your military ID at the cashier station and the discounted rate of $8 for all-you-care-to-eat meals will be for the veteran, plus a spouse and their children.
Wednesday, Nov. 13
Blood drive in honor of Dave Malott
9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Hubbard Commons, First floor, IMU
LTC David E. Malott, a 22-year Army Veteran and well-respected IOWA employee, passed away on August 11, 2024. During his extensive military career, Dave served as the University of Iowa’s commander of the Army ROTC Mighty Hawkeye Battalion. After his military retirement he ventured into civilian life as an admission counselor at The University of Iowa, where he was fondly known as Counselor Dave. Dave retired from The University of Iowa in September of 2016. Dave was a regular blood donor and during his courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) was the recipient of 37 blood transfusions. We honor Dave’s service to the country, the University of Iowa, and his legacy with this drive. Learn more about Dave here.
Wednesday, Nov. 13
Presentation: Join Dr. Robert Neymeyer, Historian at the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum in Waterloo, as he explores Iowa’s rich military history and service from the Sullivan Brothers through the oral history and personal stories shared by Iowa Veterans through the Voices of Iowa Project.

Thursday, Nov. 14
Iowa Veteran Education, Transition, and Support (IVETS) Breakfast
8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Members of the university community are invited to a free, hot, continental breakfast in 214 Calvin Hall. This is a great opportunity to meet VMC students, staff, and faculty.
Attendees are welcome to tour IVETS on the second floor of Calvin Hall to learn more about the wide range of services offered to our students in the Veteran and Military-Connected community at the University of Iowa.

Veteran flag display removal (volunteers welcomed)

Volunteers are welcomed to help remove the Veteran flag display on the west lawn of the Pentacrest.
Parking is recommended in the University Capitol Center Ramp or Iowa Memorial Union Ramp or parking lot.
